What is Batik?
Batik is an ancient wax-resist dyeing technique used to create intricate patterns on fabric, where hot wax is applied to cloth, preventing dye from soaking into those areas, and then the wax is removed, revealing the design. Originating in Java, Indonesia, this craft involves applying wax with tools like the canting (a pen-like tool) or cap (copper stamps), then dyeing, and repeating cycles to achieve complex, multi-colored patterns. The term itself comes from a Malay word meaning "to draw with a broken dot or line," and the patterns often hold deep cultural significance.
