Qipao (旗袍)—also known as cheongsam—is a traditional Chinese dress known for its elegant, close-fitting silhouette.

Quick overview:

  • Origin: Evolved in the early 20th century, especially in Shanghai, from Manchu clothing.

  • Design features: High mandarin collar, side slits, fitted shape, and decorative frog buttons.

  • Materials: Silk, satin, brocade, cotton, or modern blends.

  • Patterns & colors: Often feature florals, dragons, phoenixes, or geometric designs; colors range from classic red to soft pastels.

Modern qipao:
Today’s versions vary a lot—short or long, sleeveless or with sleeves, traditional cuts or more relaxed, modern styles.
